Many treatises provide the theoretical framework needed to explain the harmonic language used in Western music during the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. However, we find passages that seem to deviate from this framework as they foreshadow later trends. Others stand out for their originality. We will examine some of these examples in this article.
