Rhythmic Dictation

In this exercise, you will hear rhythmic patterns of varying difficulty that you must transcribe on a staff.

Options

  • Rhythmic patterns are categorized under simple measures using quarter notes or half notes as time unit and compound measures using the dotted eighth note as time unit . Select the desired time signatures (green color indicates selection).
  • With minimum note values: Exercises will use patterns using the selected minimum note values. For example if eighth and sixteenth note values are selected some exercises will use eighth notes while others will use sixteenth note as minimum values.
  • Include patterns using: The exercise will include patterns with the selected characteristic. If none is selected, the exercises will not use rests, syncopes or tuplets.
 

Exercise

To write notes:
  • Click the desired note value.
  • To write triplets click the 3 buttons, to write duplets click the 2 buttons.
  • Click Undo to erase the last note.
  • Click Check Answer when you have finished.
Writing rests
  • Click the desired note value.
  • Click the rest button to turn the last written note into a rest.
To answer using the computer keyboard
  • Select the note value using your computer numeric keypad:
  • Press ALT/OPTION with 5 (half notes), 4 (quarter notes) or 3 (eighth notes) to write triplets.
  • Press SHIFT with 3 to write eighth notes duplets.
  • Press 0 to turn the last written note into a rest.
  • Press DELETE to erase last note.
  • Press ENTER/RETURN to check your answer
Editing notes

To edit a note, select it using the mouse or the left and right arrow keys. Use the buttons or keys to change duration, turn a note into a rest or a rest into a note.

Press ESC or click outside the staff lines to remove the selection.
