Harmonic Progressions

In this exercise, you will be asked to aurally identify harmonic progressions using Roman numerals (I, IV, V6, etc.) or chord symbols (G7 Dm7, etc.).

Exercise options

Progressions using: select the type of chords to be used in the progressions (green color indicates selection).

  • I, IV, V triads: use only I, IV, V degree triads.
  • Triads: triads of any degree.
  • Seventh chords: seventh chords and triads.
  • One secondary dominant: no more than one secondary dominant in the progression.
  • Several secondary dominants: two or more secondary dominants.
  • Neapolitan and augmented sixths.
  • Modal interchange chords.

Inversions: select the inversions to use.

  • Root position: chords in root position only.
  • Root position and first inversion: chords in root position and first inversion.
  • Any inversion: chords in any inversion.

Other options:

  • Keys: select the key signatures you want to use.
  • Show key: the key will be shown if selected.
  • Show first chord: shows the notes and analysis of the first chord, if selected.
  • Play reference before each exercise: a short chord progression will be played before each exercise.
  • Use chord symbols to answer allows to answer using chord symbols (G7, Cm, etc.) instead of analysis symbols (I, V7, etc.)
  • Tempo: sets up the tempo.
  • Stop after: select this option to stop the exercise after a certain number of minutes or exercises.

Click OK or press Enter/Return to start the exercise after setting the desired options.

 

The exercise

After listening to the progression, you must analyze each chord.

  • Each button represents a chord in the progression. To identify each chord, click on the corresponding button and use the Function or Symbol palette to answer (see the next sections). Once correctly identified, the question marks will be replaced with the analysis and chord symbol.
