The appoggiatura is a nonharmonic tone played on the beat or the strong part of the beat before resolving to a chord note:
Some theorists, such as W. Piston in Harmony, consider the following examples to be appoggiaturas. Other theorists call them suspensions, or, in the case of the second example with an ascending resolution, retardations (Turek, The Elements of Music):
