Subject presentation: measures 1 to 9

The Invention starts with the two subjects:

• The bass presents subject 1 (S1), the soprano subject 2 (S2).
• S1 has an ascending movement, while S2 has a descending movement and syncopated rhythm.
• Subjects are repeated in measures 5 to 8 using inversion: soprano now plays S1 while the bass plays S2 (see invertible counterpoint).
